About Me

Name: Kenny Fernandez

Anticipated Major: Music Technology

Education and Life: A Personal Statement

I want to major in Music Technology because creating and producing music is something that I enjoy doing and want to do for the rest of my life. I want to be able to live off of making music. Before I came to Bloomfield College I was in another school studying to become an electrical engineer. I found that I was unhappy and realized that it was not the career I truly wanted to pursue. Music is one of the few things that interest me because it can give a person the ability to express himself creatively as well as emotionally.

I also love the technical aspect of creating music, such as working with software and hardware needed to record and mix music. I enjoy the challenge of working on my music on a technical level in order to improve it. The amount of things that can be done with music on a technical level is far beyond what I thought before coming to Bloomfield College. The possibilities now seem endless to me. The process of analog to digital conversion of sound is also very interesting. Understanding how sound translates inside a computer is another interesting aspect that I have learned in Bloomfield College.

This is another reason why I’m happy I found this major in Bloomfield College. Within this major I will be taught the skills I need in order to become successful in the music industry as well as the basics of graphic and video work. I look forward to learning more about how to use the software and hardware I will use to create music. The projects I have done so far have already changed the way I think about sound. In my Introduction to Music Technology class I learned how to use sounds to tell a story and how to put it all together in Pro Tools, which is the industry standard in music production software. I also look forward to the projects I am in the process of doing now and the future projects I will have to do if I am accepted into the major.

All my classes have so far forced me to look at music and sound differently. In my Digital Media Studio classes I have created graphic art for the first time and made a soundscape, which really made me look at sound differently. The work that I have done in my Digital Audio Engineering and Basic Sequencing classes has been invaluable to my future in music. My work in Digital Audio Engineering has really taught me how to record and mix analog instruments and showed me the work can be done with few elements through my 1 and 2 element projects; while the work in my Basic Sequencing class has really showed me the power of digital music and what it can do. If I am accepted into the major, I will look forward to learning more and working on future projects.
